Digging by label: following the imprint

Every record shop regular eventually learns the shortcut: you stop trusting track titles and start trusting labels. An imprint is a filter someone else already curated — a promise that if you liked the last three records on it, the fourth is worth a listen. mixinout now makes that the easiest way to dig.

The labels page, paginated

The labels page lists every imprint in the archive, ordered by how many tracks of theirs have actually turned up in DJ sets. At the top right now sit the imprints DJs lean on hardest — Drumcode with close to 800 played records, Anjunadeep, Defected, Diynamic — but the long tail is all there too. Hit Load more and keep scrolling past the big names into the smaller rooms where a lot of the interesting digging lives.

Each label gets a collage cover built from its most-played records, so you're scanning by sight as much as by name.

Reading a label page

Open any label and you get its songs ordered by how often DJs reach for them — the imprint's hits at the top, the deep cuts as you go. A few things to watch:

• The play button on each row lets you preview a record on the spot, so you can dig with your ears instead of guessing from the title.
• BPM and key sit on every row — handy when you're checking whether a label's sound fits the harmonic and tempo plan you're building.
• The play-count tells you which records are quietly ubiquitous versus which are one-DJ favourites.

It's the same flat track list you'll recognise from Browse — so once a label sends you somewhere, the digging tools stay the same.

From one imprint to the next

A label is a starting thread, not a dead end. Click an artist on a label page to see everything they're credited on; click a genre tag to jump sideways into a whole style. Labels cluster — a techno imprint's roster overlaps with three others — and following those overlaps is how a single record turns into an afternoon.

• Preview the top records, then chase the deep cuts underneath.
• When a label's sound clicks, narrow it down in Browse by key and BPM, and read how those records land in real tracklists.

The label did the first round of curation for you. The rest is just pulling the thread.
